Dorothy “Dotty” Lillian Jay was born on October 23, 1950, at Jefferson Hospital in Philadelphia. She was the first of four children born to Burke W. Jay and Lillian Elizabeth (McFadden) Jay.
Dorothy devoted her professional life to caring for others. She graduated from Hatboro-Horsham High School in 1968 and earned her nursing degree from the Abington Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in 1972.
Nursing Career
From the early 1970s through the mid-1980s, Dorothy worked in high-acuity hospital environments, including neurosurgical, cardiac, and medical intensive care units. Her nursing career included positions at:

- New York University Hospital (Neurosurgical ICU)
- Abington Memorial Hospital (CGU and ICU)
- Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (Medical ICU and later Charge Nurse)
Her work reflected technical competence, emotional steadiness, and sustained exposure to demanding clinical environments.
Second Career and Community Presence
In 1984, Dorothy began a second career with ACME Markets, where she worked for more than 35 years as a Head Cashier and Office Coordinator at stores in Norristown, King of Prussia, Wayne, and Paoli, Pennsylvania.
Known as “DJ” to coworkers and customers, she was widely recognized for kindness, reliability, and her willingness to support others during times of difficulty or grief.
Personal Life
Outside of work, Dorothy enjoyed reading, theater, musicals, travel, and time spent with family and close friends. She especially cherished time with her nephews and grand-nephews, who remained central to her life.
Illness and Death
In late 2023, Dorothy was diagnosed with mesothelioma, a rare and aggressive cancer. Her illness progressed rapidly, and she died on March 30, 2024, at Neshaminy Manor in Warrington, Pennsylvania, at the age of 73.
Her diagnosis is confirmed by pathology records and her death certificate.
At her request, there was no formal service. She asked instead to be remembered by simple moments—by breathing in salt air and raising a glass in her honor.
